President Trump suspended the threat of imposing new tariffs on Chinese imports due to the lack of agreement within the White House on trade strategy and fears that the measure could interfere with upcoming negotiations with North Korea. There is speculation that President Trump may have bowed to intense pressure from Republicans in agricultural states who advocated for a resolution of trade disputes with China to avoid retaliation for their products. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced the suspension of the plan to impose new tariffs on Sunday.
